ZusammenfassungEs werden Gründe vorgelegt, die es dem Verfasser schwer machen, die üblichen philosophischen Auslegungen von Gödels Theorem von 1931 zu begreifen. Es wird argumentiert, dass eine inhaltliche Deutung nur unter der Voraussetzung einer platonischen Auffassung von Mathematik einen Sinn ergibt. Die Schwierigkeit liegt meines Erachtens darin, dass nicht einsichtig gemacht wird, weshalb eine nichtinterpretierte Formel G dasselbe bedeuten soll wie der arithmetische Satz GA, wenn wir ein rein formales System P arithmetisch interpretieren. Wie sind in dieser Behauptung die Prädikate ‘dasselbe (...) bedeuten’ und ‘interpretieren’ intuitiv zu verstehen? Vom Standpunkt meiner pragmatisch relativierten Transzendentalphilosophie aus beurteilt, nach welcher wir durch die Verwendung bestimmter Sprachsysteme mathematische Sachverhalte nicht als objektiv vorgegebene beschreiben, sondern sie allererst erzeugen, wird es äusserst fragwürdig, ob der Abbildung von metamathematischen Aussagen auf arithmetische Aussagen eine klare inhaltliche Bedeutung abzugewinnen ist. Oeffentliche und private Diskussionen von zwei meiner früheren Arbeiten1 haben gezeigt, dass die Ansichten über Quines Einstellung zur Ontologie und zu der sog. substitutionellen Quantifikationstheorie z. T. merklich divergieren. Da eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit einem Autor vorgängig ein sachgerechtes Verständnis erfordert, wird vielleicht der folgende Versuch, seine diesbezüglichen Auffassungen anhand von Textbelegen syste‐matisch zusammenzustellen, nicht nutzlos sein 2.

SummaryMethodological questions are discussed from a point of view which the author calls open transcendentalism. In the first paragraphs the importance of normative practices is stressed and the application of the method to philosophical problems concerning ontology, analyticity and necessity is illustrated. Against Quine's holism a truely pluralistic view is defended according to which various logical or linguistic systems may be used with regard to the needs in different human activities.In the second part, arguments in favor of a instrumentalistic conception (...) of logic are advanced. Several objections against possible‐worlds‐semantics and proposals for an adequate treatment of counterfactuals suggest that contexts must be taken into account and that a distinction must be made between a descriptive and a fictional use of languages. Contre l'holisme de Quine il défend une position authentiquement pluraliste qui nous permet d'investir, selon les besoins du moment, des systèmes linguistiques ou logiques très divers.Dans les parties ultérieures, il avance des arguments en faveur d'une conception instrumentaliste de la logique. Plusieurs objections envers la sémantique des mondes possibles et un traite‐ment approprié des propositions conditionnelles suggèrent qu'il est indispensable de tenir compte du contexte tout en faisant une distinction marquée entre un usage des‐criptif et fictif de la langue. Nous sommes ainsi obligés d'accepter des entités fictives dans notre univers. Une notion de pendant est introduite qui, contrairement à celle proposée par D. Gegen Quines Holismus wird eine echt pluralistische Auffassung vertreten, wonach je nach Bedarf sehr verschiedenartige logische oder linguistische Systeme für das Fortkommen auf alien Gebieten menschlicher Tätigkeit eingesetzt werden können.Im zweiten Teil werden Argumente zugunsten einer instrumentalistischen Konzeption der Logik angeführt. Einwände gegen die Mögliche‐Welten‐Semantik und Vorschläge für eine adäquate Behandlung von irrealen Konditionalsätzen legen die beiden zentralen Anliegen der Berücksichtigung von Kontexten sowie der Unterscheidung von deskriptiven und fiktionalen Sprachverwendungen nahe, wobei entsprechend in der Ontologie die Annahme von fiktiven Entitäten erforderlich wird. ZusammenfassungAus der Sicht der offenen Transzendentalphilosophie kommt es weniger auf eine physikali‐stische Gesamttheorie der Welt an als auf eine Analyse der normativen Tätigkeiten, die wir in die‐ser ausüben. Es wird gezeigt, wie wir – vor allem auch in der Wissenschaft – selbst die Voraus‐setzungen schaffen, die es uns erlauben, aufgrund von Wertungen ausgewählte Ziele zu erreichen. Pragmatische Erwägungen bedingen in einer gegebenen Situation den Entschluss, einen bestimm‐ten Kontext abzugrenzen, indem wir die dazu erforderlichen Regeln annehmen. Dadurch erzeugen wir ein relatives (...) Apriori, das uns die Mittel liefert, um zwischen analytisch und synthetisch, zwischen Sprache und Theorie etc. zu unterscheiden.Die Methode führt zu einem pluralistischen Weltbild: Nach der Wahl der linguistischen und ontologischen Bestandteile kann die Wahrheitsfrage im Sinne Tarskis nur mehr intern geregelt werden, während sich rivalisierende Systeme als ganze allein aufgrund von pragmatischen Krite‐rien vergleichen lassen.Es werden die deskriptiven und normativen Aspekte der Begriffe des Wertes, der Norm und der Regel erörtert, um schliesslich auf die zentrale Rotle zu verweisen, die Konventionen als nicht der Willkür ausgesetzte, sondern rational begrundete Festlegungen in sämtlichen unseren Aktivitäten spielen.SummaryFollowing my conception of open transcendentalism philosophy is less concerned with a naturalistically conceived theory of the world than with the normative activities we display in this world. By our own cultural and intellectual presuppositions we create the means – scientific or others – required for the achievement of certain goals which have previously been accepted as valuable. Pragmatic considerations induce us to establish, in given situations, what 1 call contexts by adopting particular rules. We thus produce a pragmatically relativized apriori providing us with a clearcut distinction between the analytic and the synthetic, between language and theory etc.The method issues in a pluralistic world view: Once the matter concerning the choice of a linguistic system and an ontology is settled the question of truth in Tarski's sense can only be raised internally while theories as a whole are compared on purely pragmatic grounds.I discuss some descriptive and normative aspects regarding the notions of value, norm and rule in order to ascertain the primary role played by conventions in all our activities. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird die Behandlung ontologischer Fragen auf Grund analytischer Methoden untersucht und die zeitgenössische NominalismusDiskussion durchleuchtet. In einem ersten Teil erläutert der Verfasser Quines Kriterium für das, was er "ontic commitment" nennt, sowie dessen Ablehnung der sog. substitutionellen Quantifikationstheorie. Im zweiten Teil werden Hintikkas Interpretation des Kriteriums und sein Umdeutungsversuch dargelegt, der auf der Verwendung einer Quantifikationstheorie ohne existentielle Voraussetzungen beruht. Im letzten Teil wird die berühmte Kontroverse zwischen Carnap und Quine hinsichtlich ontologischer Aussagen und des Nominalismusstreites (...) erörtert. Es wird zu zeigen versucht, daß die Carnapsche Auffassung, wonach Fragen der Ontologie nur die praktische Wahl von Sprachsystemen betreffen und deshalb nicht sinnvollerweise in theoretischem Gewand auftreten können, den Vorzug verdient. Quines Betrachtungsweise scheitert letztlich an seinem Holismus und vor allem auch an den unerfüllbaren Forderungen, die er an die Definition von "analytisch" stellt. Wir bauen nicht, wie Neuraths Bild nahelegt, auf offener See an einem einzigen Schiff, dessen Planken wir einzeln ersetzen, sondern an einer bunten Flotte von Schiffen, die zu verschiedenen Zwecken gebraucht werden. Betrachtet man aber den faktischen wissenschaftlichen Betrieb aus dieser Perspektive, so scheint Hintikkas Kriterium, das den Handlungskontext der sog. Sprachspiele des Suchens und Findens mitberücksichtigt, bessere Dienste zu leisten als das Quinesche. (shrink)

According to the author, moral systems deal with our unconditional ultimate values. An ethical theory fixes the rules which allow us to distinguish good grounds and valid arguments in moral matters. The general attitude is decidedly antinaturalistic. Since value statements do not describe (perceptible) states of affairs they cannot have a truth value. Being ultimate, moral values give rise to commands which have to be obeyed most urgently, i.e., before any requirements of pudence.The author proposes his own hierarchy of values (...) which is supposed to correspond to the convictions of most normal people. The justification of a norm can only be given internally, i.e., relative to the accepted system of values. To the external question concerning the system as a whole there can be no absolute answer. Moral systems must influence the real human communicites; with respect to concrete situations within which an individual will have to take decisions a so-called system of defeasible deontic logic will be needed. In 1946 Ferdinand Gonseth founded, together with Paul Bernays, Karl Dürr, and Sir Karl Popper, the International Society for Logic and Philosophy of Science. In the next year the first number of Dialectica, a philosophical review devoted mainly to epistemological subjects, was issued. Gonseth's bibliography presents more than 190 items — roughly 25 books, several prefaces, and, for the rest, papers published in numerous reviews. A good deal of his publications concern mathematics — he was appointed professor of mathematics first (...) in Berne and then in Zurich at the well‐known Swiss Federal Institute of Technology — but he has never completely separated his mathematical activities from his philosophical work. Since all singular terms must refer to exactly one referent there are no so-called empty names. A proper name is defined as a syntactically unstructured term in a language L used in a context C such that the truth condition for a sentence (Φα in L and C consists in the fact that, in accord with the rule which maps items from the set of individual constants into the set of objects, a refers to an object x and x satisfies Φ.
